Prominent Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation with Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

Abstract
Herpes zoster ophthalmicus is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash in one or more dermatome distribution of the trigeminal cranial nerve, shared by the eye and orbit. Herpes zoster can present postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) which means the discoloration of the skin that follows an inflammatory wound. PIH can also result from allergic dermatitis, psoriasis and acne. A 73-year-old woman presented with severe pain and rash in the distribution of the right ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve for 2 days. We accessed the disease as herpes zoster ophthalmicus. After conservative treatment, there are improvement of a pain. But the patient showed a progressive and prominent discoloration of the skin in dermatome of ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve where herpes zoster invaded. After 2 months, the discoloration of the skin showed slow improvement. We report a case of PIH with herpes zoster ophthalmicus.
